I had one busy week last week! I got in to a competition called the young scientist! There was Caitriona, Alswyn and me :D we had the best time. Our project was called Differences in Peoples Perception of Natural and Synthetic Scents. What we did was we got a natural substance and compared it to a synthetic substance, the natural substances were the fruit of a banana and an orange, then we extracted the oil from cinnamon sticks and we also had vanilla pods. Then for the synthetic substances we made 2 chemicals called esters, these are just chemicals that smell like a banana and an orange, for cinnamon we used a cinnamon candle and finally for vanilla we used vanilla essence. We tested 20 people, we blindfolded them and asked them to smell a certain thing but we would not tell them what it was and then wed give them the other substance of the same smell and ask which one they thought was real. We found that 30% of people could not tell the difference. We also did a test to find out if these people have a genetic disorder called anosmia which just means you cannot smell certain things like freesia flowers or musky perfumes. What we did was at the end of each test wed ask people to smell the flowers and see if they got any smell of them. We found that the 30% that couldn't smell the differences also couldn't smell the flowers.
We had a great 4 days and we made soo many new friends and also improved relationships we already had! i came so close to Caitriona and Alswyn and also all the other girls in my year who got in! There was 11 of us in total and that made 4 different groups. Also the boys from the boys school near were we live got in! they were in the musical with me so it was like a reunion and we all got so close. it was really an amazing experience and i had a great time at the discos and table quizzes :D.
